Phone speaker crackling after water: water or damage?

A phone speaker that crackles right after getting wet usually still has water on the diaphragm or in the grille, and the crackle fades as it clears or dries. Crackling that continues 24 hours after drying points to damage such as corrosion or a torn diaphragm, which needs a service centre.

Crackling that appears immediately after a phone gets wet is usually water still on the speaker diaphragm, and it fades as the water clears or dries. Crackling that is still present 24 hours after drying usually indicates corrosion or a torn diaphragm, which sound cannot repair.

Why water causes crackling

A phone speaker works by pushing a thin diaphragm back and forth at audio frequencies. When water sits on that diaphragm, two things happen. First, the added mass changes the diaphragm's resonant frequency, so it moves less freely and at different pitches than the audio signal, heard as a low-frequency rattle. Second, surface tension holds the droplet at the edge of the diaphragm; as the diaphragm moves, the droplet breaks contact and re-contacts the housing hundreds of times a second, producing the distinctive crackle.

Rain water and tap water carry low levels of dissolved minerals. As long as the liquid hasn't dried yet, it leaves minimal residue, and the crackling stops once the water is physically removed or evaporates. Sea water, pool water, tea and sugary drinks behave differently: even after the liquid dries completely, dissolved salts, chlorine and sugars remain and keep corroding the speaker coil, so crackling that starts hours after the phone dried points to this kind of damage and needs professional attention.

What to do now

  1. 0
Stop high volumeLoud music on a wet speaker adds mechanical strain to an already-stressed diaphragm. Turn volume down or pause audio.
  2. 1m
Wipe and tapWipe the outside of the phone dry. Tap it gently against your palm with the speaker grille facing down so gravity assists.
  3. 5m
1 to 3 cleaning runsRun Water mode on Speaker Cleaner with the grille facing down. The 165 Hz tone causes the diaphragm to oscillate, working the water towards the grille opening. Check the sound after each run.
  4. 30m
Stop chargingIf the phone is plugged in, unplug it. Apple advises waiting at least 30 minutes before charging a wet device to avoid damage to the connector.
  5. 24h
Air-dryPlace the phone in a dry spot with airflow, such as a table, not in a bag or pocket. Let it dry for up to 24 hours.
  6. Test
RetestRun a speaker test sweep. If crackling is gone, the cause was water. If it persists, go to a service centre.

If a phone speaker crackles after getting wet, run a speaker cleaner two or three times with the grille facing down, then let the phone air-dry for 24 hours. Crackling that disappears was caused by water. Crackling that remains after drying usually means corrosion or diaphragm damage, and the phone should go to a service centre.

Phones exposed to sea water, pool water, tea or sugary drinks should go to a service centre even if they sound normal, because dissolved salts and sugars stay behind after the liquid dries and continue to corrode contacts and the speaker coil.

When to get it repaired

Go straight to a service centre if:

  • The phone was in sea water, pool water, tea, juice or any sugary or salty drink
  • Crackling is still present 24 hours after drying, even after cleaning runs
  • The speaker is distorting at low as well as high volume. This points to a torn diaphragm
  • The volume has dropped permanently, not just right after getting wet

Frequently asked questions

How long does speaker crackling last after water?

For tap water or rain, crackling usually fades as the cleaning runs clear the grille and the phone dries. If a small amount of water remains behind the grille, it can take up to 24 hours to evaporate fully. Crackling that hasn't resolved after 24 hours of air-drying is no longer caused by plain water. It's damage that needs a service centre.

My speaker crackles only at high volume. Is that water?

Crackling that appears only at high volume but not at medium or low volume is a different pattern. Water causes crackling across a range of volumes. Crackling only at high volume often points to a diaphragm that is slightly damaged or deformed, or to internal debris. Try a speaker cleaner once; if that doesn't resolve it, have it checked by a technician.

Can I use a hair dryer to dry the speaker?

No. Heat can damage the speaker voice coil, melt the adhesive holding IP seals, and warp the battery. A speaker cleaner physically removes water with vibration, which is faster and safer than heat-drying. For remaining moisture, room-temperature airflow is all that's needed.

Is rice effective for a crackling speaker?

No. Apple's own support page warns that rice particles can damage the phone's connectors. Rice cannot remove water from the speaker grille. It absorbs ambient humidity, not trapped liquid. The comparison is covered fully on speaker cleaner vs rice.
