Water in your Bluetooth speaker: how to dry it

To get water out of a Bluetooth speaker, turn it off, close or dry the charging port cover, tilt it so the grille faces down to drain, then let it air-dry before charging. Playing low-frequency music at moderate volume helps push water out of the grille, the same idea as a phone speaker cleaner.

To dry a wet Bluetooth speaker, switch it off, tilt it so the grille faces down to drain, open the charging port cover and leave it in a dry place with airflow before charging. Charging a damp port is the most common way a water-resistant speaker is permanently damaged.

Step by step

  1. Power offDon't charge it while wet.
  2. DrainGrille facing down; gently shake out water.
  3. Dry the portLeave the port cover open to air-dry.
  4. Low-frequency playOnce dry enough to power on, play bass-heavy audio at moderate volume.

Bluetooth speakers use larger drivers and often passive radiators, so bass-heavy music at moderate volume moves more air than a phone-sized 165 Hz sweep. The cleaning principle is the same, but the volume should stay moderate to avoid straining a wet driver.

Phone tool vs Bluetooth speaker

The web tool plays through your phone, so connecting a Bluetooth speaker sends the sweep to it; keep the volume moderate on larger speakers.

To remove water from a Bluetooth speaker, switch it off, let it drain with the grille facing down, and leave the charging port open to dry before charging. Many rugged speakers from brands like JBL and boAt are water-resistant, but water can still sit behind the grille and muffle sound until it drains or is pushed out by low-frequency playback.

Before you charge it

Charging is where a wet speaker is most at risk. JBL tells owners to dry the charging port completely before plugging in power, and Samsung gives the same warning for its phones: connecting a charger while the port is not completely dry may damage the device.

If you can still see moisture in the port, or you aren't sure, leave it overnight with the cover open before charging.

What the IP rating on your speaker means

RatingTested forWhat it means for you
IPX4Splashing water from any directionRain and splashes; don't submerge it
IPX5Water jetsHeavy rain and spray; don't submerge it
IPX7 or IP67Immersion to 1 m for 30 minutesSurvives a dunk, but drain and dry it before charging
No ratingNot testedKeep it covered; any water can reach the electronics

Ratings come from the IEC 60529 standard and are tested in fresh water. Samsung advises keeping its water-resistant phones away from salt water, pool water and soapy water (Samsung); treat a speaker the same way and follow your model's manual after a swim.

For your phone

If it's your phone that got wet, use water eject for your phone speaker.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a hair dryer on a wet Bluetooth speaker?

No. Heat can damage seals and adhesives. Let it air-dry with the grille facing down and the port cover open.

How long should I wait before charging?

Until the charging port is completely dry, as JBL advises. If you can still see moisture, leave it overnight.

Will the phone cleaning sound damage my Bluetooth speaker?

Not at moderate volume. The sweep is a low tone well within what a speaker is built to play; just keep the volume down while the driver is wet.
