AirPods speaker cleaner: how to clear a muffled AirPod
For AirPods that are muffled after water exposure, use Water mode on Speaker Cleaner with volume at 50%, then wipe the mesh dry with a lint-free cloth. For wax or lint buildup, use the Dust mode and a dry cotton swab on the outer mesh only. Never poke inside the mesh holes.
AirPods get muffled in two different ways: water on the speaker mesh after sweat or rain, and wax or lint buildup on the outer grille. Sound cleaning helps both, but the physical steps differ. The wrong cleaning method (a cotton swab pushed into the mesh, or an alcohol wipe) can push debris further in or damage the speaker diaphragm.
Water in AirPods: step by step
- 1Open on a phone or tabletOpen Speaker Cleaner on the device the AirPods are paired with.
- 2Set volume to 50%AirPods are close-coupled to the ear canal. 50% volume is sufficient. Louder risks temporary hearing discomfort.
- 3Run Water modeSelect Water mode and run it for 30 seconds with the AirPod pointed downward (driver mesh facing down) so gravity helps. You may hear water crackling. That's normal.
- 4Wipe the meshAfter the run, gently press a dry lint-free cloth against the mesh for five seconds. The cloth wicks up water the tone loosened. Repeat with a fresh section of cloth.
Apple's own guidance for AirPods (from their cleaning documentation) says to use a dry cotton swab to clean the microphone and speaker meshes. For water, Apple recommends tapping the AirPod against your palm with the mesh facing down to remove excess liquid. A speaker cleaning tone does the same thing more systematically.
Wax or lint: step by step
- Dust mode firstRun Dust mode on Speaker Cleaner for 30 seconds with the mesh facing down. This loosens surface debris and brings it to the grille.
- Dry cotton swab on the outer meshUse a fresh, completely dry cotton swab. Wipe across the outer surface of the mesh in one direction only. Do not press into the holes. The swab lifts loosened wax.
- Adhesive putty for stubborn buildupA small piece of clean adhesive putty pressed lightly against the mesh and peeled straight off can lift remaining wax without pushing it in.
- No liquidsDo not use alcohol wipes, water, or any liquid on the AirPod mesh. Liquid carries wax or debris inside the driver, and Apple does not rate AirPods for any liquid immersion.
Water vs wax: which is it?
| Sign | Probably water | Probably wax / lint |
|---|---|---|
| When it happened | After exercise, rain or an unexpected splash | Gradual over days or weeks |
| Which side is affected | Either or both, often one side | Usually the dominant-ear side (worn more) |
| Sound character | Crackles, changes with position | Consistently dull, doesn't crackle |
| Visual inspection | Mesh looks wet or glistening | Visible yellowish buildup on the outer mesh |
What not to do
- Don't push cotton swabs into the mesh holes. The mesh is a single thin layer with no useful space behind it. Anything pushed in just compacts wax against the driver.
- Don't use compressed air. The pressure can dislodge the mesh itself or push liquid deeper into the driver housing.
- Don't use alcohol on the mesh. AirPods Pro have silicone ear tips that alcohol degrades. Liquid of any kind wicks into the speaker housing through the mesh.
- Don't put AirPods in rice. Apple warns rice particles can damage connectors and ports, and rice does nothing for the speaker mesh.
Frequently asked questions
How long does an AirPod take to dry out?
After running Water mode and wiping the mesh, the sound usually improves within a few minutes. If the AirPod was dunked rather than just splashed, 30 minutes of air-drying (mesh facing down, out of the case) helps clear any remaining moisture. Don't put a wet AirPod in its charging case. The moisture can transfer to the case contacts.
One AirPod is quieter than the other. Is that always a cleaning problem?
Not always. Check Settings → Accessibility → Audio/Visual → Balance on iPhone (or the equivalent on your device) and confirm the balance slider is centred. If the balance is fine and cleaning doesn't help, the driver may need a service repair.
Are AirPods waterproof?
No. Some AirPods models are sweat and water resistant, with a rating such as IPX4, and Apple lists the rating for each model on its tech specs page. Resistant is not waterproof: a rating like IPX4 does not mean you can submerge them. None of Apple's AirPods are warranted against water damage regardless of their IP rating.
Can I use Speaker Cleaner to clean AirPods that are inside my ears?
Yes, and this is the most effective way. The driver is sealed against your ear canal, so more of the tone's energy goes into moving the diaphragm rather than radiating outward. Keep the volume at 50% or below for this reason. If you find 30 seconds uncomfortable, remove the AirPods and hold them mesh-down with the sound playing for the same effect.
