iPhone speaker cleaner: remove water and dust

iPhone has no built-in water eject, unlike Apple Watch, but you can clear water from an iPhone speaker by playing Speaker Cleaner in Safari: turn off Silent mode, set volume to maximum, hold the iPhone bottom-down and play one to three 30-second runs. Don't put it in rice; Apple advises against it.

Which speaker sounds wrong?

Where it is: Bottom edge, beside the charging port. Hold: bottom edge facing down while the cleaning sound plays.

Before you run the cleaner on your iPhone, check these: 0 of 5 done

Run Speaker Cleaner

Where the speakers are on an iPhone

Hold the phone so the speaker you're cleaning faces the floor.

  • Main speaker: the grille on the bottom edge, beside the charging port.
  • Earpiece: the slot above the screen, which is the second stereo speaker on iPhone 7 and later.

iPhone has no built-in water eject feature. Apple Watch ejects water with a series of tones when Water Lock is turned off, and iPhone users either play a water eject sound in Safari or install a third-party Shortcuts shortcut, which is not made by Apple.

The iPhone Shortcuts option

iPhone has no built-in water eject. Apple Watch does, through Water Lock.

What it isA third-party "Water Eject" shortcut for Apple's Shortcuts app (not made by Apple)
How it runsTap the shortcut or say "Hey Siri, Water Eject"; it plays a low hum for a few seconds
DownsideNeeds installing a third-party shortcut; Speaker Cleaner runs in Safari with nothing to install

Clean your iPhone speaker in 4 steps

  1. Open Speaker CleanerIn Safari or Chrome. Disconnect AirPods or other Bluetooth earbuds.
  2. Volume to maximumMedia volume, not ringtone volume.
  3. Speaker facing downBottom edge down for the main speaker.
  4. Press StartPlay up to three 30-second runs.

To clean an iPhone speaker, open Speaker Cleaner in Safari, turn media volume to maximum, hold the phone with the bottom speaker facing down and play one to three 30-second runs. The 150 to 200 Hz sweep pushes water and loose dust out of the grille without any app.

Apple advises against drying a wet iPhone in rice, with an external heat source or with compressed air. The recommended approach is to tap the iPhone gently with the connector facing down, wait at least 30 minutes before charging, and allow up to 24 hours of air-drying.

Apple builds sound-based water ejection into Apple Watch but not into iPhone. When Water Lock is turned off, Apple Watch plays a series of tones to clear water from its speaker. On iPhone, the same approach works by playing a low-frequency cleaning sound such as Speaker Cleaner in Safari with the speaker facing down.

Water resistance is not waterproof

Most recent iPhones carry an IP67 or IP68 rating, so they survive rain and an accidental drop in water. That rating is about keeping water out of the inside of the phone. It does nothing to stop water sitting in the speaker grille, which is what makes the sound muffled, and the seals weaken as a phone ages. Apple also states that liquid damage is not covered under the iPhone warranty, so treat any soaking seriously even on a newer model.

If the sound doesn't come back

Let the phone air-dry for 24 hours, then test again. If it still crackles or stays silent, book a check at an authorised service centre: Apple Support India. See also speaker cleaner for other phones.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a Water Eject button on iPhone?

No. Only Apple Watch has Water Lock. On iPhone, use Speaker Cleaner in Safari or a third-party shortcut.

Should I put my wet iPhone in rice?

No. Apple says rice particles could damage the iPhone. Air-dry it with airflow instead.

Does the "liquid detected" alert mean my speaker is wet?

No. The alert is about the Lightning or USB-C port, not the speaker. Unplug the cable, tap the iPhone gently with the port facing down and wait at least 30 minutes before charging. A muffled speaker is a separate problem, which Speaker Cleaner can help with.

Can a cleaning sound damage my iPhone speaker?

No. Speaker Cleaner plays sound within the speaker's normal range, the same as music or a call. Keep each run to 30 seconds and stop after three runs if the sound hasn't changed.

Will it work on the iPhone earpiece?

Yes. Hold the iPhone with the top edge facing down and use Earpiece mode on the earpiece speaker cleaner. On iPhone 7 and later, the earpiece is also the second stereo speaker.
