Google Pixel speaker cleaner: remove water and dust

Pixel phones have no built-in speaker cleaning sound, so use Speaker Cleaner in Chrome: media volume to maximum, Adaptive Sound off for the run, bottom edge facing down, one to three 30-second runs. If it's still muffled after drying for 24 hours, use Google's repair process for Pixel phones in India.

Where the speakers are on Pixel phones

Hold the phone so the speaker you're cleaning faces the floor.

  • Pixel phones have two speakers, according to Google.
  • Main speaker: the bottom one, which Google describes as larger and usually louder.
  • Top speaker: above the display; Google says it mainly works during phone calls.

Google states that Pixel phones have two speakers: a top speaker that mainly works during phone calls and a larger, usually louder bottom speaker. To clear water from either, hold the phone with that speaker facing down and play a low-frequency cleaning sound at full media volume.

Clean your Pixel speaker in 4 steps

  1. Open Speaker CleanerIn Chrome or your phone's own browser. Disconnect earbuds.
  2. Volume to maximumMedia volume, not ringtone volume.
  3. Speaker facing downBottom edge down for the main speaker.
  4. Press StartPlay up to three 30-second runs.

To clean a Pixel speaker, open Speaker Cleaner in the browser, turn media volume to maximum, hold the phone with the bottom speaker facing down and play one to three 30-second runs. The 150 to 200 Hz sweep pushes water and loose dust out of the grille without any app.

Apple's guidance for wet phones applies just as well to Android: don't use rice, an external heat source or compressed air, wait at least 30 minutes before charging, and allow up to 24 hours of air-drying.

Water resistance is not waterproof

Most recent Pixel phones carry an IP67 or IP68 rating; check your model's specification page. That rating is about keeping water out of the inside of the phone. It doesn't stop water sitting in the speaker grille, which is what makes the sound muffled, and the seals weaken as a phone ages.

An IP67 or IP68 rating on a Pixel phone does not stop water collecting in the speaker grille. If a Pixel speaker sounds muffled after rain or a splash, clear the grille with one to three 30-second runs of a low-frequency cleaning sound, then let the phone air-dry for up to 24 hours before testing again.

If the sound doesn't come back

Let the phone air-dry for 24 hours, then test again. If it still crackles or stays silent, follow Google's repair process for Pixel phones in India. See also when to repair and speaker cleaner for other phones.

Frequently asked questions

Does Pixel have a water eject feature?

No. Pixel phones don't include a speaker cleaning sound. Speaker Cleaner works in Chrome on any Pixel.

Why turn off Adaptive Sound?

Adaptive Sound changes the equaliser based on what the microphone hears. Turning it off for the run keeps the cleaning tone as it was designed. Turn it back on afterwards.

Is it safe for my Pixel?

Yes. It plays within the phone's normal volume limit for 30 seconds at a time.
